It’s a cultural exchange blog. Check it out!
The mycountyparks.com website is just a few hours old, but looks very promising if all the counties hop on board!
Our family has often been frustrated with the clunky county park system. When looking for new trails, parks, or campsites, it’s cumbersome to look up each county conservation board and hope their website’s up to date. Our counties have some awesome natural resources, but finding out about them sometimes means a few phone calls and, well, if your family’s like mine, that’s not likely to happen.
Enter mycountyparks. com! Only a few of Iowa’s 99 counties (Lynn, Polk, and BlackHawk, mainly) have entered their information, but the organizers think the other counties will be adding their information over the next few months.
My husband found this fun article on Bill Nye greening his house.
You’ll also note if you keep reading that Bill Nye is a swing dancer. See, all the cool Crunchies are swing dancers.
The Happy Cow has a nationwide directory of Vegetarian resources (restaurants, mostly). Here is the link to their Des Moines IA page.
A resource for you nursing moms out there – Lansinoh has a free email newsletter called Nurture Notes. A subscription (which is free) gets you a supportive, weekly email message about breastfeeding. www.lansinoh.com
Hey if you haven’t already, go check out Sara Janssen’s new website and follow their family’s journey on the Live Lightly Tour.

Neither! Because…
1. Both use up valuable natural resources for a single-use, disposable product
2. Both have negative impacts on wildlife and pollute our environment
3. Both create significant toxic by-products during their lifecycles
4. Neither is effectively recycled
If you’ve ever tried to decide which one was better for the environment, look no further. Read this great info from Reusable Bags and switch to cloth today. Someday in the near future, you might just save a lot of money by doing so. Ireland, and many other countries are already implementing taxes on plastic bags…and the U.S. isn’t far behind.
I know that a lot of people will argue that they use the plastic bags at home for various purposes (I do this as well right now). Even though it’s better than throwing them straight in the trash, it’s still better to just avoid them altogether. Honestly, what did people do before we had those annoying bags? I’m going to begin phasing mine out and not get any more.
I have blogged about my cloth bags in the past…and this is your friendly reminder to start using cloth today!
Dr. Chad Rohlfsen gives talks every month about vaccinations at his office in Johnston – they’re the second Monday of every month at 7:00. I haven’t been to one myself, but several friends have.
Today I visited Dr. Rohlfsen’s webpage and found his podcasts. For those of you into podcasting, check these out, add them to your podcasting aggregator (I use I-Tunes), and take a listen!
We just returned from a family vacation in the Wasatch Mountain range in Utah. That’s near Heber City (home of Soldier Hollow, location of a few Olympic events in 2002) and Park City (home of several over venues, including the ski jump). We travel to this area every other year, and we love how the whole area is really geared towards outdoor activitity. Hiking, biking, skiing (of course), camping, backpacking, climbing, boating, you name it.
In Iowa, we pat ourselves on the back over a few measley miles of paved multi-use trails. The Park City area has enough (nonpaved) trails to warrant its own book. We could hike all day every day for a year and probably still not see every trail just in that one area. Heaven…
Getting back to earth, while we were there, we picked up the current edition of the ReDirect Guide, the Healthy and Sustainable Lifestyles Directory.
This guide is what I want for Iowa. This is what I want Natural Living Des Moines to be. This is my goal.
Not just the guide. But what’s in it.
One Restaurant that serves only raw foods, and two others that serve a partial raw menu. Naturopaths. A Naturopathic Dentist. Organic beauty salons. Heck, REI! Wild Oats! Man.
So check it out, drool a bit, then do two things:
1) Send me information on businesses that should be included in our directory.
2) List businesses or types of businesses you’d like Des Moines to have. Figure out how to make it happen. Make it happen. Then send me the info!
